LRNT Superintendent Dr. Sharon Johnson-Shirley admires the artwork LRNTHS students have on display at the Griffith Library.

In January, patrons of the Griffith Library were greeted with artwork created by students from the Lake Ridge New Tech High School art class. The exhibit featured contemporary pieces in anime, comic book, shoe design, and acrylic genres.

Griffith Library Branch Manager Beth Alyea said the collaboration came after a chance meeting with LRNTHS Art Teacher Samantha Miestowski.

“We have been doing things with the schools, like e-cards, but I always wanted to do more,” said Alyea. “I reached out to Sam on Twitter, and we were able to set this up. The student work has been very well accepted by our visitors. We’re looking forward to doing more in the future.”

Miestowski praised the library for its willingness to work with her artists.

“Opportunities for our students to show their art are really special,” she said. “It lets them know that there are people out there that appreciate what they do. It is very encouraging, and I am truly grateful to the Griffith Library.”

LRNT Superintendent Dr. Sharon Johnson Shirley applauded both the library and the students involved in the effort.

“I want to personally thank the Griffith Library for showcasing our talented art students,” said Dr. Shirely. “Also, the student work is beyond expectations. These pieces could be in galleries in Chicago or New York. This is very impressive!”
